You just tell it

No setup wizard, no forms. You talk (who is in the house, who can do a pickup, what time somebody has to be home) and it writes everything down. What it writes lives on a page you can open and edit yourself, whenever you want.

THEN

It watches the week

It reads your family calendar and walks the coming week hour by hour: where everyone needs to be, who is driving, and how long it really takes to get there.

It tells you what breaks

Not a list of your events. You already have that. Just the two days that do not work, why, and what each one needs you to decide. Sunday evening, while things can still be moved.

How we build it

Something that knows this much about your family has to be built a particular way.

These are not features we added. They are the shape of the thing, decided before the first line of it existed.

The smallest keyring that works

Every part of Magpie gets the narrowest access that does its job, and not one thing more, even where more would have been easier to build.

One job, one wall

The part that reads your calendar cannot reach the part that remembers your family. Each piece gets its own room, and what it can see stops at the door.

The riskiest thing gets isolated first

Anything that reads the open internet is walled off before it ships, not after something goes wrong. The order matters more than the wall.

It never guesses about your life

It will ask you. It will not infer a rule from a pattern and then act on it. A confident wrong answer about your family is worse than no answer at all.

Nothing is kept behind your back

What it learns is offered back before it is stored, and everything it holds is one page in plain English. Open it, read it, rewrite a line, delete the lot.

A record it cannot rewrite

Everything Magpie does is written down somewhere Magpie itself cannot touch. An assistant that can edit its own history does not really have one.

Why we will not ship the useful thing first

An assistant that browses the web is obviously useful. It is also the piece we are slowest with, on purpose. Why? Because a page written by a stranger is the easiest way to talk an assistant into doing something stupid. So anything that reads the open web gets its own sealed room before it gets its first page, well away from what Magpie knows about your children. That order costs us features. We think it is the job.
